2009 Membership Renewal Reminder
A reminder: all 2009 membership dues are due by January 31. As we introduce Members Only
pages to the NCHC website
in 2009, your Institutional
and Professional memberships become even more valuable to you, other honors
faculty, and students. The Members Only pages of the website will include:
- The NCHC Handbook, updated in real time.
- A Members Only forum.
- A searchable Members Only database.
- Access to sample syllabi from other honors programs.
Membership renewal can be done online, or if your institution requires them, you may
print your own invoice and W-9 directly from the links in your renewal notice or
from our website. You may pay by credit card, check or purchase order.
Institutional and Professional dues may be renewed at the same time this year on
the 2009 renewal form or you may choose to process each
membership separately. Please note that if you are processing several
professional memberships for other faculty you may do each one separately
online and pay by credit card or you may process them on one form, adding the
names and personal information of the Professional members to the Special Notes
area, and contacting the office to process your payment. If you have any
questions, please call the NCHC office at 402-472-9150 and we will be happy to
help you.
Please note the January 31, 2009 deadline for all memberships. As of
January 31, all institutions that have not renewed their membership will be
removed from the website and will not have access to the new Members Only
website area. Student and all other membership types are available on
our website membership form at any time and may be completed and
submitted in one step.
Thank you for renewing your membership. Your NCHC office is available to assist
you Monday-Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm CST.

Changes
NCHC Constitution & Bylaws
Last month, NCHC members had the opportunity to vote, both
for new Board members as well as additions and changes to the Constitution and
Bylaws. One change to note is the
clarification of the definition of institutional membership.
Article III, Section 1-A: Institutional
membership, open to institutions of higher learning as well as to other
private and public organizations supportive of honors education. In
the instance of an institution with physically separate campus locations,
each campus location shall pay institutional member dues if it has its own
budgetary responsibility, curricular authority, or admits students to the
honors program or honors college on its campus. Each institutional member
shall designate a representative who may cast the vote of the
institutional member.
In addition, the new Constitution and Bylaws
establishes a new and completely voluntary type of membership. Article three provides the definition for the
new category of 'sustaining membership'.
Article III, Section 1-D: Sustaining
Institutional Membership, Sustaining Professional Membership, Sustaining
Affiliate Membership, Lifetime Professional Membership.
Bylaws, Article One, Section 1, Annual
dues for Sustaining Members shall be twice the dues established for their respective
membership categories.... One-time dues for Lifetime Professional Members
shall be ten (10) times the dues for the respective professional membership
categories.
If you have any questions about these changes, please
contact Bob Spurrier or Ricki Shine.
Thanks to the dedicated professionals on the Constitution
and Bylaws Committee who worked so hard to prepare the recommended changes to NCHC's
guiding documents.

President's Column
Dear Colleagues:
We hope that all of
you had a terrific holiday break and are energized to greet the Spring
2009 Semester.
In October, your
Board of Directors approved collaborative relationships potentially leading to partnerships with the following four
organizations: Association of College and Research Libraries, Association for
Core Texts and Academic Advising, National Academic Advising Association, and
National Society of Experiential Education. We are appreciative of the work of
the External Relations Committee in developing a plan to move forward with much
needed collaboration with other educational organizations. In fact, your
External Relations co-chair Kaye Holman, who was unable to attend the
conference, flew into San Antonio on Saturday evening so that she could present
the External Relations proposal at the Sunday Board of Directors meeting. You
should rest assured that in these difficult financial times, we have made no
financial commitment to the four organizations. You should have received,
through the NCHC listserv, a message from Kaye Holman giving you information
for the Core Texts Conference to be held in Memphis, Tennessee; Thursday, April
16 through Sunday, April 19, 2009. With the approval of the Publications Board
co-chairs and External Relations co-chairs, Dr. Susan Hoerbelt will represent
NCHC at this conference. The Core Texts Executive Director is extending one
complimentary registration as I did for his attendance at our San Antonio
conference. All other expenses will be funded through my Honors Institute. NCHC will have the opportunity to have a
table with samples of our publications and order forms for our publications. We
are thrilled to be moving forward with mutually beneficial relationships.
You should have
received through our NCHC listserv the proposal announcement for the 2009
Annual Conference. The 2009 Conference Planning Committee has been hard at work
to produce an absolutely outstanding conference for our membership. Please
consider--and even better yet--submit proposals for conference. The deadline for proposal submissions is February 20, 2009.
Yours in Honors,
~Lydia Lyons

Featured Committee External Relations
The External Relations Committee
is embarking on some exciting initiatives in the first half of
2009. Beginning this spring, with the approval and
guidance of the NCHC Board of Directors, the Committee will formally
begin
contacts with four organizations that share educational interests with
us: Association of College and Research Libraries, Association for
Core Texts and Academic Advising, National Academic Advising
Association, and
National Society of Experiential Education. These contacts will
lead to NCHC's first mutual
partnerships, as well as model future endeavors. Also this
spring, Partners in the Parks, our
popular and innovative program that models unique teaching and
learning, will
become a separate NCHC service committee.
We look forward to continued collaboration with Partners as they seek
National Park Service grants. Finally,
the Committee will be working on clarifying and implementing the
important
distinctions between sponsors and partners - the former category
representing
important supportive agencies for NCHC conferences and other
funding-dependent
ventures. In each case ... preserving and
expanding sponsorships and engaging partnerships ... we look forward to
increasing
the public profile of the National Collegiate Honors Council.
If you are interested in learning more about the
External Relations Committee, please contact Kaye Holman.

Congratulations US Professors of the Year
NCHC has received the names of
additional past US Professor of the Year award recipients and would like to honor them.
This prestigious award is administered
by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and sponsored by The
Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and recognizes professors
for their influence on teaching and their commitment to undergraduate students.
The U.S. Professors of the Year program is the only national initiative
specifically designed to recognize excellence in undergraduate teaching and
mentoring.
The U.S. Professors of the Year award winners are selected based on four
criteria: impact on and involvement with undergraduate students; scholarly
approach to teaching and learning; contributions to undergraduate education in
the institution, community and profession; and support from colleagues and
current and former undergraduate students.
This month we honor the following
honors faculty, past recipients of the U.S. Professor of the Year award:
Gary Dunbar, Central Michigan University (1997)
Mark Francek, Central Michigan University (2002)
Gary Gagnon, Central Michigan University (2005)
Isabelle Cherney, Creighton University(2007)
Norma Bailey, Central Michigan University (2007) |
Presidential Inauguration Program
The Washington Center
Honors
students from several NCHC institutions are taking advantage of the opportunity
to participate in The Washington Center's Presidential Inauguration Program this
week. Students from Oakton Community
College, East Tennessee State, Miami Dade College, Hillsborough Community
College, Elmhurst College, Southern Connecticut State University, Pace
University, Beacon College, The University of Montana, and Johnson County Community
College, among others, are spending the week in Washington, D.C., studying the
impact of the media on the presidential transition. A variety of speakers, including the
president and CEO of C-SPAN, members of the Obama transition team, hosts from
ABC News Nightline, NPR and the BBC, the Chicago Tribune, former members of
Congress, and the Ambassador from Pakistan will address students and faculty on
a number of topics. After all the
presentations, site visits, tours and briefings are over, each student will
write a memo to the new president.

NCHC Summer Camp
for New Directors
The
Professional Development Committee will be hosting a Summer Camp for
new honors directors and deans at Iowa State University, July 9-11,
2009. Participants will take part in two full days of nuts-and-bolts
sessions where they will be immersed in an honors experience that will
prepare them for success in their new positions as honors
administrators.
Participants will also learn strategies for developing annual
budgets and curricula and address staffing and administrative issues
unique to their individual programs. The schedule will include
opportunities to engage in one-on-one sessions with experienced honors
administrators and to work in small groups to develop short and
long-term strategies and goals. Participants will begin the process of
identifying key resources and allies on their own campus and learn the
'tricks of the trade' about how to recruit honors faculty and students.
The registration fee for this institute is $500 and the deadline to register is June 1, 2009.
Participants may register
and pay by credit card online or submit their registration by mail to
the national office. Full details are available in the
online brochure.
