About Portz Fellowship

Portz Fellowship Application

Committee Charge
  1. The committee wishes to reserve funds for distinctive and original initiatives. They recommend that the current student award and scholarships for honors semesters be funded through NCHC up to $4000/year. Further, they recommend that any unexpected earnings from the Portz Bequest be rolled into the next fiscal year.
  2. The Committee recommends that a new category be established, the John and Edythe Portz Fellowship. They would like these competitive fellowships to be $5000-7000 and run for up too 15 months, like other national fellowships. Braid then reviewed the application process, timetable, and eligibility criteria. One proposal per member’s institution would be allowed.
  3. Proposals would be sought that crossed boundaries and were creative and innovative. Cross disciplinary teams could apply.
  4. Proposals would be reviewed by a team of 9-11 faculty, with each proposal being read by two faculty in round one. All finalists would be read by all committee members. Braid recommended that the awards be marketed broadly and that the recipients be recognized in such a way to generate press releases.
