NCHC Activities Related to Honors Program Assessment:

I have presented on topics of teaching, learning, and program assessment and evaluation at numerous SRHC and NCHC conferences. I have also served as a consultant on several site visits, self studies, honors program reviews, and external evaluations, including institutions such as Hampden-Sydney, Missouri Western State, Austin CC, Marymount, Point Park, Tusculum, Greenville Tech, Utrecht U (Netherlands), Roanoke, Meredith, and others.

Other Activities Related to Honors Assessment:

At many institutions and meetings of professional organizations internationally, I have served as a consultant, keynote speaker, conference presenter, and workshop facilitator on improvement and assessment of teaching, learning, and program development.

I have extensive experience through publications, presentations, and invited workshops on portfolio development for enhancing and assessing teaching, learning, and program effectiveness. During a stint as Dean of Undergraduate Studies, I provided leadership for strategic planning and institutional self-study efforts toward reaccreditation. My continuing role as Director of Faculty Development (along with directing honors) has equipped me with additional insights, experience, and access to resources in the areas of teaching, learning, and assessment.

On the Role of the Site Visitor as Consultants & Program Reviewers
John Zubizarreta, Director, Honors Program, Columbia College-South Carolina

The core reason for any consultant, I believe, is essentially to serve as a facilitator for improvement of student learning and faculty development. My responsibility as a reviewer—a mutually beneficial experience—is to make sure that the honors program is one of the chief sources of inspiration for deep, engaged, lasting learning and for innovative, outstanding teaching on a campus. I have found that if those two critical requirements of any honors mission are satisfied, then the dimensions of recruitment and retention, program structure, curricular design, leadership, funding, available opportunities, administrative support, institutional positioning, and other concerns line up effectively in support of a strong, coherent program. Helping honors to strengthen such alignment in service of exemplary learning and teaching is what motivates and excites me about site visits and program reviews.
