Boston's Back Bay Neighborhood

A Greener NCHC18

In its commitment to sustainability, the NCHC is making strides to reduce the footprint of its Annual Conference - the biggest honors education event of its kind in the country. The NCHC Conference gathers attendees in cities all across America, and we want to leave these locations as beautiful as we found them. Please support NCHC's commitment to sustainability by taking the steps below for a cleaner, greener conference experience!

1. Use a Digital Program

Did you know that Americans use an average of 749 pounds of paper per person, per year? To reduce our paper usage, printed programs will not be included with your registration. There are three options to access your conference schedule:

A. Purchase a printed program as a part of your registration. Programs are $10 each, and available for pre-order only until September 21, 2018.

B. Download the free PDF of the conference program (available this summer on the NCHC website)

C. Download the free NCHC18 Mobile App, available this summer. The conference app allows you to build your own custom schedule, view our sponsors and speakers, share materials, receive notifications and updates, and much more.

2. Access & Share Digital Materials

Digital Registration Packet: To cut back on promotional printing, all NCHC18 attendees will receive a Digital Registration Packet near the start of the conference containing promotional materials from our conference sponsors and details about upcoming NCHC events and opportunities.

Sharing Table: If you're accustomed to bringing flyers for the NCHC Sharing Table for your own institution's events, we encourage you to join our Hermes Listserv and share links with your colleagues directly!

Presenter Materials: Instead of bringing handouts to your presentation, you can upload documents right to your session in the conference mobile app. Watch for details later this summer about updating your presenter profile and adding handout documents.

3. Use Public Transportation or Ride-Sharing Options

Boston's public transportation system is operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, but locals know it simply as the "T". It offers subway, bus, trolley car and boat service to just about everywhere in the Greater Boston area and beyond. To ride the T, you need to purchase a CharlieCard or CharlieTicket. These can be purchased at every subway station at vending machines and at select convenience stores. The basic fare is $2.75 with a CharlieTicket or $2.25 if you have a CharlieCard. More details about getting around Boston can be found here.

We also encourage you to use ride-sharing options when possible. NCHC often secures ground transportation discounts for members in conference cities - please see the Hotel & Travel page for updated details!

4. Reuse and Recycle Whenever Possible

It takes a lot of resources to sustain a 4-day event with 2,000+ attendees on site! Please take advantage of recycling bins where available, and grab a refillable bottle to stay hydrated throughout the conference. The Sheraton Boston offers the Make a Green Choice program to conserve water and energy during your stay, as well as the Clean the World program. As a part of Clean the World, the Sheraton's housekeeping team collects any leftover soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion or gels when they service a room. These items are then collected in large containers and recycled into usable goods for children and families in need.
