The Casco Bay Islands are linked to the historic city of Portland, Maine, by a 150-year-old ferry system. This unique relationship leads to patterns of connection, isolation, community, and diversity in a geographically small and water-bound area. This Faculty Institute will use City as Text™ strategies to explore the character and culture of the Casco Bay Islands, Portland, and the ferries that function as conduits between these diverse locales. Particular attention will be paid to who lives and works in these communities. The unexpected complexity of Portland – home to millennials and retirees as well as refugees from Syria, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo – will provide rich experiences for all. Through exploration, observation, and conversation, Institute participants will uncover, interpret, and analyze topics that are pertinent to disciplines across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.
