The educational components of the project are 1-‐2 hour seminars led by university faculty, park rangers and/or community partners. These seminars are held throughout the week and focus on select natural, cultural and historical resources protected and managed by the park. In particular, these seminars will focus on the science of the volcano, astronomy, issues of air quality, archaeology and historic preservation, Native Hawaiian history and heritage in the park and how relations with indigenous peoples are negotiated on park lands, the flora and fauna in the park with a focus on native plants, and visitor management and park stewardship.
Our schedule would include time for up to 4 seminars led by park staff depending on their availability, park schedules, and workloads. Other seminars may be led by guest faculty from the University of Hawai‘i system (particularly from Hilo campus on Big Island). Organizers will work with the park to create a program schedule that is amenable to everyone involved, and which will take into account the availability of resources at the park as be attentive to the need for flexibility given that the volcano/air quality issues will be the final determinant of possible activities.
