City as Text®
What is City as Text®?
Sometimes called CAT, and broadened into Place as Text to encourage applications of this approach to active learning in various settings, City as Text refers to structured explorations of environments and ecosystems. Designed as on-going laboratories through which small teams investigate contested areas and issues in urban environments, or competing forces in natural ones, these exercises foster critical inquiry and integrative learning across disciplines. A mini-version of this approach is included at NCHC’s national conferences. A Leader in Place-Based Pedagogy
First developed by NCHC faculty members in 1974 for use as an integrative lab/seminar to foster integrative inquiry within a cluster of disparate courses, Place as Text/City as Text pedagogy invites students, faculty and staff to engage in a sequence of exploratory assignments that combine site-specific explorations with group discussions and intentional reflection prompts. Place as Text/City as Text can be used in a variety of contexts including on college campuses during orientation programs, in natural landscapes such as national parks, and in towns/cities as part of academic courses, co-curricular planning, and study away. Ways to Engage with Place as Text
Professional Development for Faculty and Staff: Place as Text Faculty Institutes and Master Classes
NCHC Faculty Institutes and Master Classes are development opportunities for honors and non-honors faculty and administrators who wish to incorporate interdisciplinary and field-based elements into their courses and programs. Faculty Institutes are typically three to five day programs offered domestically and internationally. Master Classes are typically held as pre-conference workshops for two to three days prior to the annual NCHC conference. Those new to Place as Text can enroll in an Introduction to Place as Text masterclass, while those looking to dive deeper after completion of a Faculty Institute can join an Advanced Place as Text Master Class. The CAT experiential learning strategies learned during the Institute or Master Class include reflective practices and projects adaptable to study abroad, service learning, student orientations, campus assessments, and professional development workshops as well as honors courses in any discipline. Identifying and transferring principles of integrative experiential learning are important goals of both professional development experience. City as Text at the NCHC Annual Conference: Explore the Conference City as a Space to Learn
In each conference city, attendees have the unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the conference theme through place-based explorations of local neighborhoods, public spaces, and cultural landmarks. The CAT experience includes: an opening session, city exploration, breakouts for writing and observations, and a group closing session. Learning Opportunities for Students: Place as Text for Students
Students interested in engaging with City as Text as part of their education can participate in the City as Text event at each national conference, and keep an eye out for student-specific offerings including Civic Seminars at sites like the Chesapeake Bay, and semesters in partnership with universities like Northern Arizona. “City as Text stands as a cornerstone of honors education, championing place-based learning that fosters critical thinking and reflection. These programs offer exceptional opportunities for faculty development, providing educators with immersive experiences that enrich their teaching and mentoring practices. NCHC’s Place as Text Committee is instrumental in crafting creative programs that encourage both faculty and students to explore diverse spaces as dynamic sites of inquiry.”
