The honors program and honors college are long established communities within higher education. Honors has always prided itself on academic excellence and personal growth for the students who participate. Further, honors has continually been a leader in impactful and meaningful practices in higher education. However, the honors population has continued to evolve over time, thus making it necessary for leaders in honors to consider ways to meet the needs of unique student populations.

The honors programs at Dominican College and Monroe College have worked to create initiatives in honors to meet the needs of their students. Located in and around the New York City area, both colleges inherently enjoy diverse populations, which include many first-generation students. While the benefits are many, there are challenges that come with such diversity, whether financial, academic, or emotional. This roundtable discussion will highlight some of the unique challenges faced at Dominican and Monroe Colleges and present both the successful ways these challenges have been addressed, along with discussing areas for improvement.

Participants will be encouraged to share about the diverse populations at their institutions and the ways they work to meet the needs of their students. It is only if we address the heart of honors--our students--that we will be able to fully nurture and encourage their growth.

Facilitators

Kat MacDonald | Monroe College

Kat MacDonald is the Director of the Honors Program and a faculty member in the English Department at Monroe College. She holds a Master’s degree in Mass Media and Communication from Fordham University and bachelor’s degrees in English, Communication Arts, and Women’s Studies from the College of New Rochelle. Before coming to Monroe College as a full-time faculty member (she was an adjunct first) in 2010, she served on the editorial team of Reader’s Digest. Kat just completed a four-year stint on the Executive Board of NRHC (she rotated through Vice President, President-Elect, President, and Immediate Past President). She is now serving as the Executive Secretary for NRHC. Kat is also a member of the NCHC Publications Board.

Serving the students in her college’s Honors Program has been most rewarding. She believes honors gives students the opportunity to present their research, collaborate with their peers, and become exposed to new ideas and places. Kat believes that honors is all about the students, and that we as honors administrators, staff, and faculty are here to help make that experience unforgettable. Kat can be reached at kmacdonald@monroecollege.edu.
