Partners in the Parks Directors Retreat: Rocky Mountain National Park

The directors retreat is ideal for any honors faculty, staff, or administrators who are interested in leading a student trip in the near future. By immersing yourself in a Partners in the Parks project, you will learn what makes Partners in the Parks such an exceptional experiential educational opportunity for our students.

Please read the following before registering:

To keep a mix of project participants from a variety of honors institutions, facilitators prefer no more than 2 students from a single institution per project.

Affiliating yourself with your institution

If you are not the director of your program, or you do not hold a current NCHC Institutional or Professional Membership, and/or have not attended an NCHC program in the past year, you may not be in our software system.

You must sign up as a "Contact" prior to registering for any NCHC program, using the link below.

Be sure to select “Contact” when creating a username for our website. If your institution has an Institutional Membership, signing up as a "Contact" will affiliate you with your institution, and you'll receive the member discount. If you sign up for any membership aside from "Contact," you will be asked to pay for that membership fee.

You'll receive an email notification, and THEN you may start registration for the intended institute.

(If your institution is not a member of NCHC, please proceed as a "Guest.")

*Members receive a 50% discount on NCHC Partners in the Parks registration pricing!

Mandatory Documentation

When you register, you will be required to turn in 3 forms stating your acknowledgement of NCHC policies as a participant of Partners in the Parks. To save you some time while registering, we recommend downloading these files now, digitally or physically signing them, and have them ready to be uploaded with your application.

PITP Directors Retreat
The directors retreat is ideal for any honors faculty, staff, or administrator who are interested in leading a student trip in the near future.  By immersing yourself in a Partners in the Parks project, you will learn what makes Partners in the Parks such an exceptional experiential educational opportunity for our students.  Activities include meeting with National Park Service staff and conservancy organizations, completing a service project, hiking, and horseback riding—all while learning about the principles of stewardship and conservation that are essential for maintaining our national parks for generations.  You’ll also learn some of the practical considerations that go into planning a trip, from how to create partnerships to campfire cooking skills to the basics of wilderness first aid.  

Tentative Itinerary

  • Sunday, July 10
    Arrive in Denver
    Block of rooms reserved at hotel near airport, dinner on own or with group at local restaurant

  • Monday, July 11
    Morning: Breakfast at hotel and shopping for food; Travel to Rocky Mountain NP and set up camp in Glacier Basin campground
    Afternoon:  Short hike near campground
    Evening:  Campfire presentations

  • Tuesday, July 12
    Morning:  Park tour and service project with Rocky Mountain Conservancy
    Afternoon:  Meeting and discussion with Conservancy and NPS Staff
    Evening:  Campfire presentations

  • Wednesday, July 13
    Morning:  Drive up Trail Ridge Road, explore Tundra World Nature Trail (< 1 mile), meet with NPS staff
    Afternoon:  Optional hike down from continental divide (there are more and less strenuous options)
    Evening:  Night sky presentation by NPS staff at campground

  • Thursday, July 14
    Morning:  Wilderness first aid instruction
    Afternoon:  Horseback riding 
    Evening:  Campfire presentations

  • Friday, July 15
    Pack up camp and head to the airport; please make flight reservations after noon.

Refunds

All requests for refunds MUST be submitted in writing to the national office and RECEIVED no later than thirty days in advance of the trip departure date.

  • Received prior to 30 days before trip departure:          Full refund, less a $50 per person administrative fee
  • Received within 30 days before trip departure:            No refunds granted
