Institute Focus The purpose of this summer institute is to support honors faculty, staff, administrators, and student leaders in the cultivation of practices and programming that are LGBTQIA+ friendly in their university, honors community, academic work, and daily lives. Honors faculty, staff, and student leaders need professional development in this area as we endeavor to create community to all students. This is not an easy topic to explore, it does not come without controversy and emotions, and there is much more we can all learn from each other. Consequently, this work should not be undertaken in isolation; rather, in the collaborative setting of an intensive workshop series. In this this three-day virtual LGBTQIA+ workshop, participants will cover a myriad of LGBTQIA+ topics, learn about LGBTQIA+ policies, hear from the LGBTQIA+ community, share LGBTQIA+-friendly practices, create LGBTQIA+-friendly programming, and discuss LGBTQIA+ issues within a safe space. This workshop is dedicated to understanding, identifying, creating, and implementing LGBTQIA+-friendly strategies in honors programs and colleges. Morning sessions will focus on common reads, videos, and testimonies. Participants will break for lunch with afternoon sessions focused on applying what they have learned to admissions practices, curricular programming, co-curricular programming, and their honors community. These sessions will be a combination of discussion, peer feedback, and consultations on proposed program changes and implementation strategies. Workshop participants will commit to presenting the results of their efforts at future NCHC conferences.
Audience This session is designed for honors faculty, staff, and administrators. (Unsure if this session is for you? Contact a facilitator for more information.)
