My favorite NCHC memory is my long association with the Beginning in Honors workshop, from the first time I heard
"Welcome to the world of Honors!" from Maggie and Earl Brown, to being invited by Sam Schuman to join the BIH
leadership team, to serving alongside Kate Bruce as we led a remarkable group of dedicated and wise volunteers. BIH
introduced me to what Honors education has been and could become, and gave me many opportunities over many
years to pass on that gift to others..
What do you consider to be your greatest professional achievement?
My life as a teacher, scholar, and member of academic communities was transformed by my initiation into Honors education,
with its commitment to "broader, deeper, and more complex learning-centered and learner-directed experiences," undertaken in
community. I believe that my greatest professional achievement has been to extend that generous vision of education not only
within the honors program I helped establish and the many others I have advised, but also more widely as a humane and
hopeful approach to learning, teaching, scholarship, and community life.
