Community Engagement Award
Awards

Community Engagement

NCHC's Community Engagement Award was created by the Student Affairs Committee to showcase how honors education leads members to make a difference in their communities. Emphasizing student excellence outside the classroom, this award will be given to one service project each year and will cover the cost of up to two student conference registration fees. The student(s) coordinating the winning project will be offered a presentation at NCHC's Annual Conference to highlight their service project.

Nomination Requirements

  • Each student must be currently active in honors at an NCHC member institution.
  • The service must be sponsored by the student’s institution, and the institution must agree to cover travel expenses of the student representative(s).
  • The service project must be implemented between November of the previous year and November of the current year. If the project has not been implemented by the close of the application, applicants must detail concrete steps taken to plan the event and provide a timeline for the service project.
  • A letter of support from the honors director or faculty sponsor for the community project must also be submitted. Please nominate only one project from your program for this award.

Nominations will open April 1 and close June 16.

Beyond the Block San Antonio

Jasbeth Medrano and Michael Pozos
The University of Texas at San Antonio

Beyond the Block San Antonio, is a storytelling series that seeks to amplify the voices and narratives of people directly impacted by criminalization and incarceration within our communities. The project took place from March 2024 to December 2024, hosting nine system-impacted storytellers, poets, and artists. These participants collaboratively selected the theme of Beyond Hope and with this theme in mind, determined their format for expression– poetry, music, speech. Topics ranged from struggles with substance abuse, vulnerable experiences in childhood, recovery, starting non-profits in the community, and familial love providing the strength to push forward. The goal of our program is to alter the narrative surrounding incarcerated individuals towards one that centers compassion and understanding among our community.
